McDougle Kicks Off Sales Tax Holiday with Prime Outlets

Senator McDougle Kicks Off

Back to School Sales Tax Holiday with Prime Outlets

Williamsburg – This morning Senator Ryan McDougle (R-Hanover) and representatives of the Prime Outlets Williamsburg kicked off Virginia’s first Back to School Sales Tax Holiday with an official ribbon cutting ceremony. This special event drew a large crowd as shoppers started to arrive at Prime Outlets to take advantage of the sales tax free weekend starting Friday morning, August 4th and ending on Sunday, August 6th. Prime Outlets is extending its hours from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Prime Outlets features over 90 brand name stores and ranks in the top 10 outlet centers in the industry.

As a result of new legislation that Senator McDougle sponsored this year, Virginia residents and visitors will benefit from Virginia’s first ever sales tax holiday on school related items. Examples of items that will result in the 5% savings include school supplies valued at $20 or less per item and footwear and clothing valued at $100 or less per item/pair. A tax discount during the critical back-to-school shopping season will stimulate retail sales and contribute significantly to the Virginia economy.

In addition to exempting school supplies and clothing, retailers may also choose to absorb the sales tax on “non-exempt” merchandise. Stores that do not sell school-related items may voluntarily participate in this program. Virginia joins 12 states, including North Carolina, Maryland and the District of Columbia, by enacting this legislation. Instead of individuals traveling to neighboring states to take advantage of the tax-free status, families will benefit locally.

“From the beginning, all the retailers seemed very interested in the legislative process of this beneficial new law, and today I am pleased to be able to help Prime Outlets kick off Virginia’s first sales tax holiday. We predict that the weekend will be a huge success for consumers, retailers and the Commonwealth,” said McDougle.

Hanover National Night Out A Big Success

Mechanicsville, VA – To celebrate the 23rd National Night Out, 70% of the families in the Huntington Woods Subdivision in Mechanicsville participated in a neighborhood party on August 1st. Jim McLaughlin from the Hanover Sheriff’s Office presented Huntington Woods with their Neighborhood Watch sign to officially recognize the subdivision as the newest Neighborhood Watch Program in Hanover County. To escape the extreme heat, children played on a special moonwalk waterslide provided by the neighborhood.

Hanover Board of Supervisor Member, Bob Setliff attended as well as Delegate Frank Hargrove and Senator Ryan McDougle, who commented, “We are fortunate to have a dedicated Sheriff’s Office who works hard with the community to ensure safety and well being for all.”

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness in our communities. It generates support for and participation in local anti-crime programs and strengthens neighborhood spirit and police – community partnerships. The event also sends a clear message to criminals about the anti- crime organization of the neighborhood.
